Silver Stage: Celebrating 25 Years of The Torrington Players

The Torrington Players’ 25th Anniversary in 2005 marked a quarter-century of community theatre in Great Torrington and was celebrated with a summer garden party that brought together members, friends and supporters from across the group’s history.

A quarter-century of local theatre

The Torrington Players began life in 1980 when a small group of enthusiasts in Great Torrington decided to create opportunities for local people to make theatre together. Over the next twenty‑five years the company grew more than ten‑fold, developing from a handful of friends into an established amateur society recognised for being open, welcoming and inclusive. Working primarily at The Plough Arts Centre in Fore Street, the group staged a rich mix of drama, comedy, musicals and pantomime, steadily building a reputation for taking on new challenges while keeping a friendly, community‑based spirit at its heart.

Marking the anniversary

By 2005 the Players had not only survived but flourished, and the committee chose to celebrate the 25th Anniversary with a relaxed garden party held on 3 July that year. The event gathered current members alongside many familiar faces from earlier productions, reflecting the way the company had woven itself into the cultural life of the town. The large group photograph from the day captures several generations of performers, backstage crew and supporters together on the lawn, underlining how the Players’ story is shared by a wide community rather than a small core of regulars.
Looking back at the work

The anniversary fell in a particularly active period for the company, surrounded by productions that illustrate their range and ambition. Around this time the Players were presenting titles such as “The Happiest Days of Your Life” and “The Illusion”, alongside an already substantial back‑catalogue that ran from classics like “The Importance of Being Earnest” to large-scale shows such as “Oliver” and “The Wizard of Oz”. This variety echoed the ethos that had driven the group since 1980: to encourage dramatic art locally and to give people of all ages and levels of experience the chance to perform, direct, design and crew live theatre.

Legacy of the celebration

The 25th Anniversary party acted as both a reunion and a springboard, reminding members how far the company had come while reinforcing its confidence to keep experimenting and growing. In the years that followed, the Players continued to develop new work, tour to village halls and contribute to large community projects at The Plough, confirming their place as an enduring part of Torrington’s cultural landscape. Seen in this context, the 2005 group photograph is more than a record of a pleasant afternoon: it is a snapshot of a living, evolving theatre family at a key moment in its story.
